A traditional company from the Netherlands
The DAF brand suggests many things, such as “Dutch” and “Automobile Factory”. In fact, the abbreviation stems from the brothers who founded the company, Hub and Wim van Doorne, who used the name “Van Doorne´s Aanhangwagen Fabriek” [“Van Doorne’s Trailer Factory”]. In Europe, the success story of the brand, which also became known for producing trucks after initially manufacturing trailers, is closely associated with the two letters XF: the introduction of the 95 XF series at the end of the 1990s started a winning sequence which continued to the successor XF 95, XF 105 and today simply the XF.
Engines for the DAF XF
The XF is primarily used for long-distance transport and has the 10.8 and 12.9 litre Paccar MX-11 and MX-13 in-line six-cylinder engines. DAF offers the MX-11 in five power levels from 210 to 320 kW (286 to 435 PS) but for the XF, only the most powerful variant is possible. With the Paccar MX-13 you can choose 303, 340 and 375 kW (412, 462 and 510 PS). The engines are manufactured in Eindhoven and used throughout the Group – since 1996, DAF has belonged to Paccar Inc. – also used with the US alliance of Kenworth and Peterbilt. The cab alternatives are: long with high roof or spacious cab (Space Cab or Super Space Cab) and for the chassis you can choose 4x2, 6x2, 6x4, 8x2 or 8x4.
Drive variants for the DAF CF
These are also available for the CF series in different configurations with leading and/or trailing (steering) axles. On the Allrounder for long-distance, distribution and construction transport (also as the modified “CF Construction”) all of the MX-11 and MX-13 power levels are available. For more light-duty operations, the 6.7 litre Paccar PX-7 with 164, 186, 208 or 231 kW (223, 253, 283 or 314 PS) is also an option. The CF has three possible cab variants: short, long and long with high roof (Space Cab).
For more light-duty operations, there is the DAF LF
While XF and CF serve the heavy-duty sector from 18.0 tonnes of gross weight, the third DAF series, named LF, covers the medium-weight range from 7.5 to 18.0 tonnes of gross weight. In addition to the PX-7, the four-cylinder Paccar PX-5, the fourth current DAF engine application, can also be found in lighter models. The 4.5 litre unit is offered for the 112, 135 and 157 kW (152, 184 and 213 PS) power levels. The LF is only available as a 4x2 two-axle variant, including a light tractor-unit version with a gross weight of 13 tonnes. For the 18-tonne version, DAF also offers the LF with a special construction site chassis (“LF Construction”). The LF can be selected with the short Day Cab or the longer Sleeper Cab.
Modern ZF gearbox
DAF uses ZF gearboxes, including the automatic AS Tronic. Like a range of other manufacturers, since the beginning of 2015 the Dutch company has thereby been including a predictive cruise control that adjusts the speed and shift strategy to the topography. The name of the new DAF system: Predictive Cruise Control.
