TPMS Legislation 2024: What does this mean for commercial vehicles?

A new regulation has been in force in the EU since July 1, 2024: tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) are now also mandatory for newly registered commercial vehicles. This regulation applies to trucks, buses, motorhomes and trailers with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 tons. But what does this mean for transport companies and workshops? We provide an overview of the benefits, challenges and solutions.

Why was the TPMS obligation introduced?

Correctly set tire pressure has numerous advantages:

  • Increased safety: optimal tire pressure reduces the risk of tire blowouts and improves vehicle control.
  • Cost reduction: Less tire wear means lower maintenance costs and longer tire life.
  • Fuel efficiency: Optimum tire pressure reduces rolling resistance, which means less fuel is consumed.
  • Environmental protection: Lower fuel consumption reduces COâ‚‚ emissions and protects the environment.

What challenges does the TPMS obligation entail?

The new regulation places a number of technical and organizational requirements on transport companies and workshops:

  • Maintenance and initialization: TPMS sensors must be checked regularly and re-initialized when tires are changed.
  • Service life of the sensors: Direct measuring sensors have a battery life of approx. 4 to 6 years and must then be replaced.
  • Compatibility: Vehicles with different trailer combinations require perfect communication between the systems

The TPMS obligation is an important step towards greater safety, environmental protection and efficiency in road traffic. We can provide you with the right solutions and expert advice for a smooth changeover.
