VDL: strong together

The bus division of VDL is part of the VDL group, an international industrial company with its head office in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Since its foundation in 1953, the family company has grown into a company with 85 operating companies in 19 countries, with a workforce of more than 10,000 employees. The strength of the VDL Group lies in the cooperation between the companies, combined efforts bringing advantages for all products of the company. VDL Bus & Coach covers chassis and chassis modules, coaches, public service vehicles, mini and midi buses, as well as special projects. Today, companies such as Bova, DAF Bus, Berkhof, Hainje, Jonckheere and Kusters are all part of the VDL Group.

MidCity and MidEuro as entry-level models

The MidCity minibuses are available as small public service vehicles for 14-21 passengers, with lengths ranging between 7.34 m and 8.37 m. The conversion is based on the Sprinter from Mercedes-Benz. The MidEuro is also based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, this coach can take 19-22 passengers and is offered in various lengths between 7.34 m and 8.37 m. Taxi and wheelchair buses for commercial passenger transport or for private care home transport are made by VDL, based on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter according to the customer's request.

Citea: the complete series drives on ahead

VDL has already put ten variants of the Citea on wheels. The public service vehicle comes in lengths of 11.98 m, 12 m, 12.9 m, 13.74 m and 14.4 m with a range of three-axle designs, the articulated bus has a length of 18 m or 18.75 m. The range starts with the low-floor city bus, through the low-entry model and up to the special cargo versions, which are in particularly high demand in Scandinavia, where luggage is carried in addition to the passengers in the buses. Shortly after the launch of the Citea SLF, the classic low-floor public service vehicle was joined by its articulated cousin, the Citea SLFA. For these diesel buses, VDL uses engines from Cummins (ISB 6.7 187 kW / 255 PS) and Iveco (Cursor 9 with 228 kW / 310 PS or 265 kW / 360 PS). In anticipation of the electromobility which is coming to the urban centres of Europe, VDL has also developed an electric bus with a wheel hub drive to follow on from its hybrid bus. The Citea Electric is also available as an articulated bus; the first version was for Cologne, actually an individual design in BRT style.

Back to the future

With the Futura, VDL has gone back to the future. What once began with the Bova make is now being continued by VDL: the second generation of the Futura comes as a high-decker, high-floor model, also as a middle-decker. The Futura is valued as the bread-and-butter vehicle by many companies. Those who want more will find it with the VDL Jonckheere. This premium coach is available in two lengths (13.35 m and 13.75 m) and in two heights (3.66 m and 3.82 m). For the engine, VDL installs the DAF MX 13 340 with 340 kW / 460 PS. The Synergy, which once arose under the Berkhof brand, completes the double-decker range. The double-decker Synergy comes in a choice of two lengths: 13.03 m or 14.09 m. The engine of the double-decker coach is the DAF MX 13 375 with 375 kW / 510 PS.
