MAN: German brand focussing on public service vehicles
Today, the long-standing manufacturer MAN ("Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg", meaning "Augsburg-Nuremberg Machine Works") is a part of Volkswagen AG. Whilst MAN provides the corresponding demand in Europe mostly for complete buses, in the rest of the world the manufacturer supplies chassis to coachbuilders. The current European programme is divided into the Lion’s City, Lion’s Intercity, Lion’s Regio and Lion’s Coach series.
For the city: MAN Lion’s City
Public service vehicles are at the heart of the MAN brand, in particular the low-floor city bus series called Lion's City. The series has numerous versions, from the compact 10.5m short Lion’s City M up to the 18.75m long Lion’s City GL. Between these sizes, there are the 11.98 m long Lion's City models with two or three double-width doors and an option of upright or horizontal engine, as well as low-entry versions - optionally also fitted like the intercity buses with a simple door at the front. If you are wanting a little more, then MAN can also offer you its three-axle Lion’s City C at 13.68m long or the Lion’s City L at 14.70m long. The articulated bus Lion's City G at 17.98 m long and the articulated bus Lion’s City GL at 18.75 m long offer even more in terms of capacity. MAN uses Euro 6 engines with 6 cylinder in-line diesel engine Common Rail unit with 184 kW / 250 PS (Lion’s City M) to 265 kW / 360 PS (Lion’s City GL). To achieve the desired reduction in harmful emissions, MAN relies on the combination of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
For intercity: MAN Lion’s City Ü and MAN Lion’s City LE
Taken from the city bus series, MAN also has the intercity Lion’s City Ü as well as the low entry version, the MAN Lion’s City LE. The special MAN Lion’s City variants will win you over due to the handy combination of the low-floor and low-entry design, in particular their low vehicle height and seating capacity, with the seats facing in the direction of travel. The low-floor design on which this is based ensures a low construction height, at the same time reducing the repair and maintenance costs.
New: the Lion’s Intercity
The MAN Lion’s Intercity is completely new and is uncompromisingly tailored for use in intercity and shuttle services or as a robust school bus. The driver's work space, which has been developed for use in public transport for the MAN Lion’s Intercity, offers straightforward operation and generous space. For the engine, MAN has chosen the 213 kW / 290 PS D08 Common Rail engine.
Natural gas and hybrid as an alternative
As well as with its diesel engine, MAN has made a name for itself in the city bus market, above all with its natural gas power unit. The MAN Lion’s City GL CNG city public service vehicle was awarded "Bus of the Year 2015". During the "Bus Euro Test", its gas-powered articulated bus convinced a jury of international specialist journalists. The compressed natural gas (CNG) engine is available as a 6-cylinder with 200 kW / 272 PS and 228 kW / 310 PS. The MAN Lion’s City Hybrid is intended to promote environmental protection with its innovative technology. A series MAN Euro 6 diesel engine equipped with an automatic start-stop system drives a high-performance generator which supplies the power to two electric traction motors. In this way, the MAN Lion’s City Hybrid will use up to 30% less fuel, thus saving up to 10,000 litres of diesel fuel per year. This is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 26 tonnes per year. In addition, the hybrid bus can approach bus stops completely electrically, with no pollution or noise, which is a blessing for local residents and passengers.
Touring coach: the MAN Lion’s Coach
The MAN Lion’s Coach is the only coach in the MAN product range. The two or three axle high-decker coach is a particular favourite of football clubs; a large proportion of the German league, the Bundesliga, use a MAN Lion’s Coach as their team coach. Manufactured at the MAN plant in Ankara, the coach is available in three lengths: a 12 metre two-axle coach with 49 passenger seats in 3-star quality, the three-axle Lion’s Coach C at 13.2m long with 55 passenger seats and the Lion’s Coach L at 13.8m long with 57 seats. Customers can choose from three engines: the 10.5 litre MAN D20 6-cylinder diesel engine with a rating of 294 kW /400 PS and the 12.4 litre MAN D26 with 324 kW /440 PS or 353 kW / 480 PS. MAN also offers the Lion´s Coach EfficientLine, a variant of the Lion's Coach, designed for use as a public service vehicle on longer routes and as a long-distance coach. This version is only available with a 324 kW / 440 PS, 12.4 litre engine and automated 12-speed manual transmission.
